Here's how homeschool record-keeping generally works in Virginia, and how FaithSchool keeps your hours, attendance, and portfolio organized so you can prove it when someone asks.
What this jurisdiction expects
Under the HSLDA framework this is a moderate-regulation state: notice plus a standardized test or professional evaluation.
We show the published HSLDA regulation tier here rather than specific hour, day or filing numbers, because those vary and change. Confirm the exact, current requirements with the official source below and HSLDA before you rely on them.
What to keep on file in Virginia
Checked against the official Virginia sources listed at the bottom of this page — these are the records those sources describe, not general habits. Rules change; the official regulator stays the arbiter.
- Notify the division superintendent annually by August 15 with a description of the curriculum — limited to a list of subjects to be studied — and evidence that you meet one of the qualifying criteria.
- By August 1 after each school year, submit evidence of progress: a composite score in or above the fourth stanine on a nationally normed standardized achievement test (or ACT/SAT/PSAT equivalent), an evaluation letter from a licensed teacher or degree-holder, or a report card/transcript from a college or correspondence program.
- Missing the evidence-of-progress deadline can place the program on probation for one year with a remediation plan filed alongside proof of qualification.
- Information parents provide under this section may not be disclosed outside the local school division without the parent's written consent.
